Role title: Marine Natural Capital Advice Specialist

Organisation: Joint Nature Conservation Committee

Closing Date: 10/08/2020

Role Location: Peterborough or Aberdeen. Under current circumstances we can be flexible around remote working options until such time that we are able to return to the office. The post-holder may be required to attend meetings at various localities in the UK, and potentially internationally, involving overnight stays away from home.

Role Description

JNCC has been at the heart of UK marine conservation science, management and policy advice for decades, and we are proud of the UK’s record of marine protection, management and planning, which is globally recognised.  There is always room for improvement, and existing processes too often set environmental benefits in opposition to concerns about economic prosperity and jobs.  This is misleading.  For lasting prosperity there needs to be a balance between short term, single-sector or market-based gains and wider benefits to society and well-being, and with long term stewardship of our marine assets.

As marine natural capital advice specialist, you will use your skills and knowledge to identify, share and promote solutions to improve decision-making, and develop and maintain strategic relationships with our customers and partners.  You will encourage the Natural Capital approach, articulate the benefits and drive dialogue to break down some of the unnecessarily polarised positions amongst competing marine uses.

The role will work closely with a specialist in data and analysis who will gather, organise and analyse the evidence on which your work will depend.  Together, you will identify and design products and outputs to support our mission, and frame the outputs to appeal to key audiences.

One of the advantages of working for JNCC is the opportunity to collaborate with different specialisms, including for this role economics, ecology, site and wider protection, monitoring, marine industries, modelling and policy.
