Event Description

Part of the World Oceans Day celebrations, this event was rescheduled in respect to the Black Lives Matter demonstrations.  Organised by Department of Zoology undergraduate and CCF Marine member Rebecca Loy, this panel will discuss female empowerment and overcoming barriers in ocean leadership. The panelists are:

Christine Amour-Levar: Founder of Women on a Mission and HER Planet Earth, two not-for-profit organizations that take all-female teams on pioneering expeditions as a way to support worthy causes.

Tara Abrina: Freediving instructor and two-time Philippine record holder for freediving, and founder of Kapit Sisid, a network of freediving and marine conservation professionals. She is currently a graduate student researcher of environmental economics at the University of the Philippines.

Swietenia Puspa Lestari: Founder and executive director, Divers Clean Action. Tenia’s organisation has brought over 1,500 volunteers across Southeast Asia together to combat marine debris issues, and she has been recognised as an Obama Asia-Pacific Leader, one of BBC’s Top 100 Inspiring and Influential Women and one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs of Asia.

Mili Ramesh Hayllar: Mili is the Vice-Secretary of Arugam Bay Girls Surf Club, the first women’s surf club on the east coast of Sri Lanka, run for local women, by local women. They aim to promote women’s surfing in Arugam Bay and Sri Lanka, spreading the stoke and inspiring more Sri Lankan women to surf.
