Natural Cambridgeshire – the Local Nature Partnership

‘A better Quality of Life with Nature at its Heart’

Natural Cambridgeshire (NC) is the Local Nature Partnership (LNP) for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.  The Government, in its Natural Environment White Paper 2011, committed to set up LNPs to bring about improvements in their local natural environments. Following consultation with stakeholders, the Cambridgeshire LNP Board was established in 2012. It is a partnership of leaders from businesses, local authorities, the health sector, farming, wildlife and environmental organisations. NC launched its Vision and Work Programme in 2014, which set out its mission as: Our job and our commitment is to use our influence, our skills, our outreach and our passion to ensure that nature is at the heart of decision-making across Cambridgeshire – for its own sake and for the benefit of those who live here. We believe that if we achieve this, Cambridgeshire will be a better place to live in, work in and visit, and become an exemplar for sustainable living.

To meet this mission statement, Natural Cambridgeshire:-

  • Informs and influence decision-makers through a proactive, evidence-based outreach and thought leadership programme;
  • Champions innovative solutions and pioneering approaches to ensuring that nature is integral to the growth agenda to achieve a high-quality environment;
  • Engages with partners to foster understanding of how nature can help achieve their objectives;
  • Develops and share best practice toolkits to demonstrate how each element of our vision can be realised; and
  • Challenges decisions that ignore or damage nature and place our vision at risk.

See NC’s website ( for the activities it undertakes and supports, which have included launching a ’Developing with Nature Toolkit’ and ‘A Natural Future for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’ leaflet, and holding a ‘Naturally Healthy Conference’.  On 27th July, NC will launch ‘Doubling Nature - A Vision for the Natural Future of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough in 2050’ which sets objectives to enhance existing, and create new, large areas of rich wildlife habitat and more accessible green space through development, and to ensure these are better connected.  This aspiration has already been included in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Non-statutory Spatial Framework.
