Trait-based approaches to ocean life, Copenhagen 26-28 August 2013
An international workshop on trait-based approaches to ocean Life is being held in Copenhagen later this month. Trait-based approaches are important for modelling phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish communities. They allow the complexity of marine ecosystems to be tackled in simple models. Rather than considering species per se, individual organisms are characterized by a few essential traits that describe the ensemble properties of the many species. Further simplifying principles can be derived because individuals optimize their fitness, which is the principle by which properties of communities and ecosystems emerge.
