William Eccles, trustee and founder of Synchronicity Earth, discusses The Commitment. Based on the idea that people can do something powerful and positive to
help nature recover and the climate to stabilise, the concept has been extensively researched
qualitatively and quantitatively and work is now beginning to test it in the field, with full launch set
for April 2020. The Commitment is a declaration by UK citizens that they will make the climate
and nature their primary concerns when deciding how to vote. To strengthen the declaration, they
make a personal statement, in any medium, explaining why they have made The Commitment.
1. Political parties’ policies become more ambitious as they compete for votes
2. Bolder government action follows, whoever is in power
3. Disadvantaged communities benefit: the most likely to suffer from the consequences of
environmental degradation and the least able to prevent it
4. Possible impact through similar organisations being set up in other countries

political action on climate change
and biodiversity loss
